All writers should read—copiously, annoyingly, unceasingly. Follow A Writer Life on Instagram, and you’ll see book after book, pages flying, opinions spouting (*cough*), and one very famous little device: ✨ A Kindle Colorsoft. ✨

What is a kindle colorsoft?
The Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition is a water-resistant color e-ink reader. E-ink means that “paper-like” screen we all love that is so much easier on the eyes than a tablet or a phone. No migraine-inducing, melatonin-robbing blue light! Read before bed! In bed! During bed!
What’s so special about the kindle colorsoft?

In short? The screen is in color. (I know. Duh …)
As a … human being, I have always been drawn to color. Highlighters. Bookmarks. Tabbies. Mismatched socks. BRING ON THE COLOR! If my school curriculum didn’t include some bit of color thrown into the pages, forget about it.
Since you brought up highlighters … 💁🏻♀️

THE KINDLE COLORSOFT CAN HIGHLIGHT IN FOUR DIFFERENT COLORS (yellow, blue, pink, orange 🥰).
I was like a fat kid diving into Willy Wonka’s chocolate lake. I lost my ever-loving mind over this–then promptly fell into decision-paralysis shock. How do you choose what color means what? Someone, please tell me what to do.
The kindle colorsoft is a mood reader’s wet dream 🥵
As a mood reader, I neveeeer know what story is going to pique my interest next. My first stop? Staring at the cover. Unblinkingly. Letting it sink deep within my soul. Does the font match my mood? Do the images jive with my psyche? Is the color vibin’?
I always felt it was monumentally wrong that e-ink readers would show a preview of a beautifully detailed cover … only for it to be trapped in the world of black and white. LET IT OUT! Oh, Pharaoh, Pharaoh. Let my people go.
🌈 Kindle Colorsoft Specs

- 🔆 Auto-adjusting front light. Perfect for cozy midnight reading.
- 〰️ Wireless charging. I’m extra and bought the wireless charging stand so I can eat cereal, charge my Kindle, and read at the same time. (Yeah. 😎 I’m nerdy spice.)
- 🔋 Bad to da bone battery life. (👈🏻 It’s “official” spec name. 🤓) The Kindle ColorSoft holds up to 12 weeks of charge. Hasn’t died on me once. I’m actually trying to charge it less, just to see how it does.
- 💦 Waterproof (IPX8). Helloooooo, stress-free bathtime reading. 🛀🏻
- 💾 32GB storage. This thing can hold 10,000 books. You won’t read them all. You’ll still try, like I will.
- 🔌 USB-C. If this spec interests you.
- ⛔️ No ads = blessed silence
💸 Real Talk (Show me the monayy)
At $280, the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition is pricier than the base Kindle, which you could buy at $109.99 (but you’d be sacrificing water resistance, along with the color e-ink screen). The next choice would be the Kindle Paperwhite at $159.99.

How to get the best bang for your buck 🤑
I purchased the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition bundle, which included the Kindle, the wireless charging base, and a gorgeous walnut brown premium leather cover. Buying a bundle saves you $40. Save even more money by waiting for an Amazon deal day.

👩🏼🏫 My experience with the Kindle ColorSoft Signature Edition
I think it’s freaking cool.
In full disclosure, I’m upgrading from the humble beginnings of a 2011 Kindle Keyboard. (Remember those?) I swore I’d never upgrade. I planned on paying $20 every seven years for a fresh dinosaur battery, jam it in there, and live in bliss … until I learned about something magical called a backlight. That changed the game for me. After I learned waterproof Kindles existed (even though I never took baths, or sat by the poolside, or got in the water ever because I’m practically feline), I was ruined forever. In the good way. I wanted one.
Most ardently.
What about the infamous yellow light? (Skip to the next point if you don’t know what I’m talking about!!!! save yourself! Seriously.)

☝🏻 That’s how I feel about the picky-picky who brought the yellow light to my attention.
Ignorance is bliss, Friends.
But, yes. It exists. 😔 Only if you’re messing with the temperature settings on your Kindle and looking at it from the side.
The biggest con of the Kindle Colorsoft?
My biggest con with the Kindle Colorsoft is its clarity. When transitioning from e-ink to color e-ink, the words appear grainier and less crisp. It could be the newness of the technology, but still, I wish this weren’t so.

Is it a dealbreaker? No. My book covers are still in color. Hee. 😄 Magazines, comics, and picture-heavy books still show beautifully on the Kindle Colorsoft with vivid images. When transitioning from something like a Kindle Paperwhite or Remarkable 2 Tablet back to the Kindle Colorsoft, you see the real difference.
Final thoughts on the Kindle ColorSoft 📝

If you’re reading plain novels and you don’t mind living in an I Love Lucy episode, you might not need the color. But if you love visuals, annotate like a fiend, judge books by their covers, or just want an e-reader that feels like a Pinterest board… this is it, Friend.
The Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition is for book lovers who like a little color therapy with their coffee. 😌 It’s fun, beautiful, and inspires more reading time. Will it change your life? Maybe not. But it will definitely make reading feel more you.
Would recommend. Especially with fuzzy socks, a latte, and a rainy playlist.
